Ohio Valley Roller Derby

Ohio Valley Roller Derby (nonprofit) is an amateur, athletic, and social organization formed in 2010 by a group of women wanting to bring the sport of roller derby to the local area within the Ohio Valley including: eastern Ohio, the northern panhandle of WV, and southwestern PA. We are an inclusive group and maintain the belief that derby is for every BODY! If you are interested in skating with us, please send us an email or Facebook message. OVRD follows all rules, policies, and guidelines of our governing body WFTDA (Women’s Flat Track Derby Association). For a list of rules of policies please visit their website at www.wftda.com.

  • I want to join your team! How do I join?

Have and open mind, a willing attitude, be 18 years or older, and just show up! We practice at the Highlands Sports Complex twice a week from 8-10 PM. Feel free to message our Facebook page to find out which days it will be that month. You can drop in anytime weather or not you belong with another league if you are interested in joining OVRD.

What if I am looking to transfer to your league or just want to drop in to practice?

Awesome! We’d LOVE to have you! Please send a message to a current skater or our Facebook page about transferring and someone will reach out to you about when they can can! Drop in days for skaters on other leagues are Tuesday night practices. Just message our Facebook Page or a current skater and we will update you on practice for that day.

I don’t know how to skate. I am too old to skate. I am too thick to skate. I have no coordination (enter any excuse here…)

We teach you everything you need to know! Some of our skaters start out not even being able to stand up on skates and by the end of the season are doing laps with the best of them! You will be surprised what your body is capable of! We are also compromised of all different types of bodies! EVERY BODY is a derby body!

    What equipment do I need?

To start out: nothing. We have loaner gear you can borrow until you decide to buy your own gear (just may want your own mouth guard!) The basics you have to have to skate are: quad roller skates (no inlines unless you just want to ref), knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards, helmet, and mouth guard.

Do I have to skate to be a part of OVRD?

NO! Our team cannot function without the help of our awesome volunteers! We have skating refs (if you want to skate and not do contact), NSOs (non skating officials), merch table attendants, EMTs, scoreboard attendants, announcers, bench coaches, and more! If you want to be a part of our weird little community, we will find a spot for you to participate!
